This work was a collaborative project between Johan Gustafson in Lund as part of Helen Edström's PhD thesis, and Per-Anders Carlsson. We prepared thin films of palladium covered by gold on a sapphire support. The idea was to pull the Pd out in an oxidizing environment and monitoring the process in-situ with surface X-ray diffraction (at beamline P21, Petra III). Depending on the amount of Pd the hope was to stabilize a specific surface orientation of PdO that is active for the catalytic oxidation of methane under the studied conditions. The article summarizes our findings from those experiments.
The question of oxidizibility of a thin palladium layer on a gold surface is also related to another project in Per-Anders Carlsson's group, in which Yanyue Feng (PhD thesis 2023) investigated Au@Pd core shell nanoparticles. (see also Yanyue's article on the synthesis of those)
