Summer vacation

Escape into nature

August 09, 2025

Summer vacation time in Sweden - everything slows down, workplaces are deserted, tourists take over the cities.
I took a realaxing three weeks vacation and spend most if it in Dalarna in central Sweden. One week hiking in the area around Grövelsjön close to the Norwegian border and one week relaxing somewhere between Leksand and Borlänge. It was a more unusual temperature up there with over 25 degrees for several days and very dry. That's of course not only bad for the raindeers whose food is drying up and who try to flee to the highest mountain tops to get some cooling. It is also bad for the nature in general. The thin layer of soil covering the rock dries up and the increasing number of heavy rainfalls washes away the soil. Erosion is to see everywhere. The Swedish mountain range is a prime spot to observe how fast climate change can alter a landscape as also the tree line (the height at which trees start to grow) moves upward. I will just let this stand here as an observation.
Back in Gothenburg it is now possible the catch the last of blueberry season and the lingon berries are ready. First jars of jam have already been produced at home.
Vacation time is always too short (of course) but I am motivated to come back to work and start up work in the new Surface Area and Porosity lab that is now soon ready.
